Blackberry Ginger Smash

Blackberry Ginger Smash

This refreshing Blackberry Ginger Smash is a great flavor combo of a little sweet with a little kick.  It’s made with muddled ripe blackberries, lemon wedges, and vodka, mixed with a homemade ginger honey simple syrup & topped with seltzer.

Doesn’t this Blackberry Ginger Smash look so fun & pretty?  It would be great to serve at the next (socially distanced) party you’re hosting or just to enjoy while sitting outside enjoying the beautiful weather.

Blackberry season is here and the batches we’ve had so far are incredibly sweet & juicy.  Penny can eat them up by the crate.  We actually have to hide them from her when she’s eating a meal or else she won’t eat anything else but those.  She’s obsessed.

I’ve made a version of these before using ginger ale but I just didn’t want to have any ginger ale in the house.  I’m not cutting out sugars, but I’m deciding where I would rather consume my sugar, and that’s ice cream at the moment (specifically ice cream from here).  Plus, I hate sugar headaches from alcoholic drinks, and honey is always the cure.  The mixture of the ginger honey simple syrup & seltzer replaces the ginger ale perfectly!

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE HONEY GINGER SIMPLE SYRUP?

You’ll just need:

  • honey
  • filtered water
  • fresh ginger root

The ginger honey simple syrup is really easy to make.  You need to make it in advance since we need the ginger root to steep  & infuse the honey-water mixture .  Any leftover simple syrup can be used for hot & iced teas or more cocktails!

WHAT WILL I NEED FOR THE COCKTAIL?

Another very simple list:

  • blackberries
  • lemon wedges
  • ginger honey simple syrup
  • vodka
  • selzter

The blackberries, lemon wedges, honey ginger simple syrup, & vodka are all muddled together.  Once poured over ice, top it off with bubbly seltzer water, and maybe a blackberry or two to make them look good.

  • 2 cocktail glasses

Ingredients

Blackberry Lemon Ginger Smash

  • 3 - 4 oz vodka
  • ½ cup blackberries
  • ½ tbsp Ginger Honey Simple Syrup
  • 2 lemon wedges, cut in half
  • seltzer
  • ice

Ginger Honey Simple Syrup

  • ½ cup honey
  • ½ cup filtered water
  • ½ cup sliced fresh ginger root scrubbed well, no need to peel

Instructions

for the simple syrup

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the honey & filtered water. Stir constantly until the honey has dissolved.

  • Remove from heat and let the ginger steep for about 1 hour or until the syrup has enough ginger taste for your liking.
  • Pour and strain the simple syrup into a jar with a cover. Store in the refrigerator for about two weeks.

for the cocktail

  • In a cocktail shaker or a mason jar, throw in the blackberries, Ginger Honey Simple Syrup, & vodka. Squeeze two halves of a lemon wedge & throw the them in. Muddle to break down the blackberries completely.
  • Fill two glasses with lots of ice. Squeeze half a lemon wedge into each drink, throw it into the glass.
  • Pour the muddled mixture through a strainer (or use a fork to keep the blackberry seeds & lemon rinds from getting into the drinks) between the two glasses. Fill the rest of the glass with seltzer. Garnish with a blackberry or two.
